Shepherdstown Street Fest showcases local and regional musical acts

By Staff | Jun 15, 2015

Shepherdstown Street Fest presented by Morgan Academy will host select up and coming local and regional band s as part of the day long festival. The festival has two stages: the Main Stage which hosts touring national acts and the smaller, more intimate Library Stage for the burgeoning local and regional entertainers. The 2015 Library Stage festival acts are as follows:

Herb & Hanson, an acoustic duo performing at 1:15 p.m., features two songwriters expressing themselves with little more than a guitar, a mandolin, and their respective voices. Based out of Virginia, these restless ragamuffins have performed for audiences from Alaska’s gold mines to California’s grape-vines. They’ve wowed crowds from the Great Lakes to the Carolinas; from the dry deserts of the southwest to the wet wilderness of the north east. Their voracious work ethic noticeably shines through as their vocal harmonies intertwine with their adept instrumental work to bring their original compositions alive to any able listener. Mink’s Miracle Medicine, performing at 3 p.m., is one band that continues to prove that in music, authenticity shines. Formed two years ago by songwriters Melissa Wright and Daniel Zezeski, the prolific pair have already shown their skills, prowess, and fearlessness in the field of Americana. Melissa and Danny have achieved an incredible amount in music for their age. In her teens, Melissa attended Berklee College of Music on scholarship where she studied with mentors like Livingston Taylor. As a young artist she pegged performances with Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, and was an alternate for the Ben Folds Choir and has appeared on stage and on records with the Woodshedders, the Acoustic Burgoo, Bumper Jacksons, and Jake and the Burtones. Concurrently, Danny was forging his own path as an early member of the Menzingers, and is featured as a songwriter on their Epitaph records release On The Impossible Past. The Plate Scrapers, performing at 4:45 p.m. are an energetic string band out of Western Maryland performing their own intriguing and captivating originals as well as a tasteful selection of covers and bluegrass favorites. This passion-driven quartet consisting of Evan Bell (upright bass), Brett Kretzer (Mandolin, Vocals) Derek Kretzer (Banjo, Vocals) and Andrew Jordan (Guitar, Vocals) draws influence from their wide background in music including folk, jam, jazz, blues, Americana and of course above all, bluegrass. The Plate Scrapers are becoming a more familiar name every day. They have taken multiple tours building their fan base throughout the entire southeast US, and have supported respectable acts such as Larry Keel, Rumpke Mountain Boys, and Cabinet. In February and March of 2015, they will be on month long tour in support of their brand new, debut album, “Contact.” Exclusive Sponsor – Capital Fiduciary Advisors.

The Reckless Island, Headliner- performing at 6:35 p.m., is a reggae/rock band from Richmond, Virginia. Though very new to the RVA scene, the Reckless Island band members have almost 10 years experience playing together. Brothers Riley and Alex Kerns (lead vocals and guitars out of Berryville, Virginia) alongside percussionist and vocalist, Willy Mathews, were in the regionally popular, Golden Butter Band from ’06-’12. With an updated and upgraded line up, look for the Reckless Island playing in Richmond and surrounding areas in the upcoming year as they work from the ground up to become a legitimate force to be reckoned with in the reggae/rock world. The Reckless Island have had the honor of sharing stages with such acts as: Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, HR of Bad Brains, Trevor Young of SOJA, Badfish: a Tribute to Sublime, Through the Roots Toubab Krewe, Footwerk,TAUK, the Southern Belles and many others.
