Harpers Ferry bird walk planned
The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will sponsor a bird walk along the C&O Canal at Harpers Ferry on Wednesday, July 22.
There is no fee and anyone with an interest is welcome to participate.
Pre-registration is strongly encouraged but not required. To register, go to the PVAS website at www.potomacaudubon.org.
The walk will involve about 4 miles of level walking along the Canal towpath.
Participants should plan to meet at 7 a.m. at John Brown’s Fort in Harpers Ferry National Park. Parking may be available along Potomac Street near the train station.
From there, participants will take the footbridge over the Potomac River and walk about two miles northwest along the C&O Canal towpath and back. Species likely to be sighted include raptors, woodpeckers, vireos, warblers and orioles, as well as other summer nesting species.
Participants should bring water and insect repellent and dress appropriately for the prevailing weather conditions. The Society will provide binoculars for those who do not have their own.
The walk may be cancelled in the event of heavy weather.
