Cafe Society to discuss John Brown, a Murderer or Martyr?
The Cafe Society, a part of Shepherd University’s Lifelong Learning Program will hold its next discussion on Sept. 22. The focus will be on the abolitionist, John Brown was he a murderer or martyr? This weekly discussion will be held from 08:10 to 9:25 a.m. in the Cumberland Room of the Shepherd University Student Center, Tuesday morning. Pre-registration is not required, and there are no fees or charges.
Mike Austin, who facilitates the sessions along with Art Wineburg and Dr. Jim Bowen, commented that: “Dr. John Splaine’s WV Appalachian History class will be joining us for this discussion. Jack Young and Tim Murphy will be taking two different sides and debating the issue on whether John Brown was a murderer or martyr. They will then switch sides and debate the other’s position. The students have to decide which side is their real position.” He commented further that: “You can’t live in this neck of the woods and not be steeped in the drama and controversy surrounding John Brown. With Jack Young and Tim Murphy stirring the pot, it should prove to be a good discussion. And if you don’t know him, Professor John Splaine is no shrinking violet.”
