Major bike ride to take place in area Sunday

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is warning area residents and motorist that a major bicycle ride sponsored by Potomac Pedalers with as many as 2,300 bicyclists will start and end their ride at Shepherd University on rides of 100; 64; 54 and two of approximately 21 miles. The riders will end their course at Shepherd University. There is no set start time for the 5 rides but most riders are expected to begin their rides between 7 and 9 a.m. and riders of the 100 mile ride as well as all riders are expected to be back at Shepherd no later than 5 p.m.

Many of those riding will take routes that will also take them into Berkeley County, as well as Frederick and Clarke counties in Virginia.

Sheriff Pete Dougherty said, “Sheriff’s deputies will increase traffic patrols and Jefferson County Reserve Deputies will assist in keeping the road ways safe. However with five different routes and distances from 100 to 20 miles motorists are urged to use great caution if they are driving on the 20th. “

A link to the five rides is part of this notice to give the public greater insights as to the roads expected to be impacted.

The following roads in Jefferson County will be impacted: Scrabble Road, Sulphur Springs Road, Old Leetown Pike, Wiltshire Road, Luther Jones Road, Whitmer Road, French Road, Uvilla Road, River Road, Engle Switch Road, Millville Road, Bakerton Road, Gardner Lane, Trough Road, Flowing Springs Road, Myerstown Road, Withers La Rue Road, Summit Point Road and Leetown Road

Cyclists will cross U.S. Route 340 at Withers-LaRue till they get on to Myerstown Road and cyclists will cross U.S. 340 at Millville Road to continue on Bakerton Road.

There will be several rest stops for riders including: Moulton Park – 716 Bloomery Road (for the people riding 100 miles); Jefferson County Fairgrounds – 1707 Old Leetown Pike, Kearneysville; Clearbrook Park – 107 N. Kent Street, Winchester, Virginia; Henry Arena (at Poorhouse Farm Park) – 233 Almshouse Road, Martinsburg; Bedington Fire Department – 775 Bedington Road, Martinsburg; and the end point at Bellevue Manor, 292 Shepherd Grade Road, Shepherdstown.
