League forum on excess levy

By Staff | Oct 16, 2015

On Nov. 10, a Tuesday, at 7 PM in Wright Denny Auditorium, the League of Women Voters, as part of its Voter Education goal, will present a forum about the upcoming referendum on the Board of Education’s excess levy.

Jefferson County will go to the polls Dec. 12 to decide whether to continue to support an excess levy that has been in place since the 1940s providing extra funds for the school system.

Votes will determine whether money will be available for teacher training, and salaries for instructors and service personnel not covered by the state formula providing textbooks for all classes and supplies for arts and sciences projects as well as instruction and materials for 4 H and band.

The excess levy also finances public and school libraries.

The forum features Dr. Bondy Shay Gibson, superintendent, and Scott Sudduth, president of the Board of Education. Attendees are invited to ask questions about every aspect of this issue before they go to the polls. The League hopes to give the public an opportunity to learn more about the excess levy before voting day. For more information, call Ron Widmyer, 304 725 4326
