SMS students visit Shepherd University during College Application and Exploration Week

By Staff | Oct 23, 2015

Eighth-grade students from Shepherdstown Middle School visited Shepherd University on Oct. 21 as part of the College Foundation of West Virginia’s College Application and Exploration Week. During their visit, students will tour the campus and attend a presentation about preparing for college. They’ll learn about a typical day in the life of a college student and what areas of study the university offers as well as the importance of high school grade point averages and how to take advantage of scholarship opportunities.

The visit was meant to provide a starting point for students to begin considering post-secondary education options and career interests. As a community service activity, students also participated in making cards for a local children’s hospital.

“We’re looking forward to meeting Shepherdstown Middle School’s eighth graders,” said Holly Frye, acting vice president for student affairs at Shepherd University. “Shepherd University is always happy to welcome visitors of all ages to our campus. This particular age group is especially exciting as they are beginning to truly explore their futures. We hope to demonstrate that higher education is a real possibility for them.”

College Application and Exploration Week will be held across the state from Oct. 19 through 23. Aside from visiting Shepherd University, Shepherdstown Middle School students will participate in activities such as College Colors Day and Dress as Your Career Interest Day. Teachers and staff members also will share their college experiences with students.

“I am very excited that our students are going to be able participate in this tour. Even though our school is two blocks from the University, there are many who have never stepped foot on the campus,” said Amy Chrisman, counselor at Shepherdstown Middle School. ” This is the time to get our students excited about earning a higher education and wanting to strive to be lifelong learners.”
