SAR meeting held
On Friday night, Jan. 15, the General Adam Stephen Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution held their winter dinner-meeting at the Purple Iris in Martinsburg. There were 60 Compatriots, spouses and guests in attendance.
The program was presented by the CAP (Civil Air Patrol) of Martinsburg. member of the chapter. Compatriot and Cadet Captain of the CAP, David Hill introduced the speaker, Colonel Dennis Barron.
Colonel Barron is the Vice-Commander of the Middle East Region of the CAP. Also in attendance was Captain Robert Orr, squadron commander, Martinsburg Composite Squadron and two of the cadets, Cadet Lt-Colonel Nicole Orr and Cadet Captain Jacob Fisher.
Colonel Barron spoke about the history of the CAP which started during World War II and its duties and operations today. The CAP is involved in search and rescue, disaster relief, counterdrug support and humanitarian services. They also are proud of their cadet program which introduces young teens to aviation and they progress through the program at their own pace. Leadership training, aerospace education, physical training and moral leadership are some of the areas offered to the cadets. This was a very interesting presentation as many of us were not aware of everything that was done in the CAP.
In the business portion of the meeting, the chapter inducted four new members, James Auxer, mayor of Shepherdstown, brothers Keith and Lane McIntosh and Stephen Zurenda, Jr. All four Compatriots were presented with the SAR Rosette and their membership certificates after being sworn in by Chapter President Joe Khare.
