The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will sponsor a winter bird walk in the North Schoolhouse Ridge section of the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park on Wednesday, Feb. 24.

The walk will be led by local birding expert Deb Hale. It will begin at 8 a.m. and will last about two hours. After that, those who wish to continue will proceed to the Potomac Street dam for an additional hour of waterfowl watching.

It will be free and anyone with an interest is welcome to come along, regardless of their birding skills. Children are welcome as well.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged but not required. To register, go to the PVAS website at www.potomacaudubon.org.

The trip will involve about 2.5 miles of walking through fields and unpaved roads, along mostly level terrain. In addition, the group will stop at the Potomac Street dam.

Birds expected to be seen include wintering birds, waterfowl and raptors.

Participants should plan to meet before 8:00 a.m.at the North Schoolhouse Ridge parking area. From Route 340 just west of Harper’s Ferry, turn north on Bakerton Road (Route 27) and go about three-quarters of a mile to the parking area on the left.

Participants should wear sturdy footwear, dress for the prevailing weather conditions and bring along drinking water.

Binoculars will be available for anyone who needs them.

The trip will be canceled in the event of bad weather.
