By Staff | Apr 8, 2016

On March 22, The League of Women Voters presented its Community Service Award for 2016 to the Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle.

Literacy Volunteers serves all three counties in the Panhandle helping adults improve their basic literacy skills in reading, writing, numeracy, and, in Jefferson County, providing instruction in English as a Second Language.

More recently, the organization has organized classes to prepare immigrants for US Citizenship

Literacy Volunteers has provided adult education to Jefferson, Berkeley, and Morgan counties for more than 30 years, and the organization is honored to receive a Community Service Award from their neighbors.

This year, LVEP plans to expand its outreach by offering tutor training, additional computer literacy tutoring, and more community-centered events. For more information and class locations, please consult lvep-wv.org, “like” them on Facebook (Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle) or follow them on twitter (@lvepwv).

On presenting the award, League President Deborah Royalty praised the organization not only for its commitment to literacy and learning, but also for embracing citizenship education, one of the core missions of the League itself.

The League of Women Voters works to encourage informed and active participation in the democratic process through voter registration, education and the promotion of fair, active and open government. The League of Women Voters of Jefferson County, WV neither supports nor opposes candidates but is engaged in local, state, and national issues of importance to our community.
