The Audubon Discovery Camp, which is sponsored by the Potomac Valley Audubon Society, is registering campers for its 2016 summer season. The camp is entering its fourteenth year. It is a nature-oriented summer day camp for children in the Eastern Panhandle and nearby Maryland,

This year’s camp will span eight weeks from June 6 to July 22.

Sessions for children ages 6 through 13 begin on June 6. Two additional weeks during the summer will be devoted to sessions for preschool-age children: July 11-15 and July 18-22.

Fees range from $50 to $200 per week.

Children age 13 and older can apply to serve as Junior Staff, positions that offer excellent opportunities to develop leadership skills.

Sessions this year will be held at PVAS’s Yankauer and Stauffer’s Marsh nature preserves in Berkeley County and at the Peter Burr Living History Farm in Jefferson County.

All of the camp sessions are aimed at helping children gain a better understanding and appreciation of the natural world. All of them offer hands-on experiential learning led and are supervised by experienced instructors.

Session sizes are kept very small to ensure an excellent instructor/child ratio of 1:10.

This year’s sessions at the Yankauer Preserve will include “Nature’s Architects,” “DIY Nature,” and the always popular “Camp Survivor.” A special 4-day week close to the July 4 holiday will be called “Science in the Woods.” A session for middle school teens is entitled “Wildlife CSI.”

The Peter Burr Farm camp sessions will include “The Simple Life” which focuses on colonial arts and crafts and “Pioneer Survivor” which will feature an overnight under the stars at the end of the week.

A new session this year, “Project Webfoot,” will take place at Stauffer’s Marsh on Back Creek Valley Road in Berkeley County. This primitive day-camp will allow children to explore a wetland habitat and learn more about the animals that make wetlands their home.
