The Jefferson County Museum invites the public to a free presentation of vintage photographs by the museum’s historian Doug Perks at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, at the Jefferson County Museum, 200 E. Washington Street, Charles Town.

This slide show and talk, Changing Faces Mr. Jefferson’s County, is the second in a series of photography presentations at the Jefferson County Museum.

The talk will feature historic and recent photos from the museum’s collection to illustrate changes in Jefferson County over the past 150 years-what Mr. Perks describes as “a pictorial trip back in time.” Light refreshments will be served.

Doug Perks is known throughout the area as the premier historian of Jefferson County.

He has spent his adult life researching countless aspects of the county’s history and as a result has incredibly detailed knowledge about the county-its people, events, buildings, institutions and much more.

Perks earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in teaching history from West Virginia University and James Madison University, respectively; taught history in county public schools for 20 years; and served on the Charles Town and Jefferson County Historic Landmarks Commissions and on the boards of Historic Shepherdstown Commission and Harpers Ferry Historical Association. Currently, he is on the board of the Jefferson County Historical Society, where he has served as president, curator and recording secretary.

Perks is a certified park guide with the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

The Jefferson County Museum was founded in 1965 with the mission to preserve the history and heritage of the county.

Its extraordinary collection encompasses a wide range of artifacts reflecting the events and the lives of the people of Jefferson County from early Native American activities to the settlements of the 1700s through the 21st Century.

The museum is open from mid-March through mid-December, Tuesdays Saturdays from 11 am to 4 pm. Admission is $3; children under 18, students with ID and members of the Charles Town Library are free.
