Civil War center to commemorate Memorial Day
Shepherd University’s George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War will commemorate Memorial Day by hosting a special event titled “West Virginians at War” on Monday, May 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will feature historians, including several Shepherd students, representing soldiers from across three centuries holding firing and cooking demonstrations.
A wreath laying ceremony with a procession beginning at the center will take place at noon. From 2:30-4:30 p.m. the center will sponsor a guided walking tour of Locust Spring Hospital in Keedysville, Maryland, which was used as a field hospital after the Battle of Antietam.
“This is a very unique opportunity as Locust Spring is currently a private residence and not typically open to the public,” said Dr. James Broomall, center director. “The homeowners have graciously opened their doors to the George Tyler Moore Center and will provide an overview of the site as well as a walking tour of the property.”
The George Tyler Moore Center, 136 W. German St., is open to the public throughout Memorial Day. Those interested in touring Locust Spring must make reservations. For more information, contact Tom White at 304-876-5429 or twhite@shepherd.edu.
