Town picnic to offer fun activities

By Staff | Jul 1, 2016

Shepherdstown’s 4th of July community picnic will have plenty of children’s activities again this year.

Highlights will include scavenger hunts, face painting, a water balloon toss, a display of wild birds, a waterslide and more. All the children’s activities will be free.

The picnic will be held from 12 noon to 3 p.m. on Monday the 4th at Morgan’s Grove Park. It will be held in the park’s pavilion.

This will be right after the town’s annual 4th of July parade, which will be held downtown starting at 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome at both events and admission will be free.

Scavenger hunts will be held at 1 and 2 p.m. Children will search for small American flags hidden around the park and everyone who participates will get a prize.

Face painting will be available from 1 to 3 p.m. The face painter will be Jill Harner, from Shepherdstown’s Flyeye Design.

The water balloon toss will be at 2:15 pm.

The other children’s activities will be available throughout the picnic. The Trego Mountain Sanctuary will be on hand with some hawks and owls to help children learn about those wild birds. the Potomac Valley Audubon Society is supplying a Story Walk, which will feature pages from a children’s book posted along one of the park’s trails

The waterslide is being provided by Jefferson Rentals, with the Shepherdstown Fire Department supplying water.

There will also be a “Stream Cleaner” Pinball Game, an educational game from the Cacapon Institute, and cornhole and ladder-toss games.

Shepherdstown’s 4th of July parade and picnic are organized annually by the Rotary Club of Shepherdstown. The goal is to provide a wholesome, family-oriented 4th of July celebration for the town.
