Lambda Chi Alpha – Delta Zeta Canned Food Drive a success

By Staff | Mar 10, 2017

Fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha and sorority Delta Zeta of Shepherd University held a canned food drive on campus from Feb. 6-10 with a goal for this semester to collect 2,000 pounds of food. The groups would like to thank Blue Moon Cafe for their generous donation and Goodwill for holding a box collecting cans for their cause.

In addition, Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church will be collecting cans on Sunday Mar/ 26. Stop by that Sunday and bring cans! The groups would also like to give a special thank you to these businesses and organizations for donating and collecting cans as well as the Shepherdstown community, students and faculty of Shepherd University, and those who donated to the go fund me page as well!

The canned food drive took a lot of planning and effort to organize. The week of Feb. 6-10, both LCA and DZ sat in the Rams Den on campus and collected both monetary and canned donations from Shepherd University students and faculty. Altogether, members volunteered over 127 hours through that week.

From going and visiting with businesses and organizations to making many phone calls and having countless meetings, the groups are proud to say that they have quadrupled the goal and raised over 8,500 pounds of food just through the month of February.

Lambda Chi Alpha is partnered with Feeding America, an organization that supplies food for over 60,000 food banks and meal programs nation-wide (feedingamerica.org).

Through Feeding America the groups have the opportunity to collect monetary donations and then give to Feeding America. They donate 12 pounds of food for every $1 donation! Due to this amazing exchange, the fraternity and sorority were blessed with over $700 in donations which translates to over 8,400 pounds of food. All monetary donations are given to Feeding America and all material can donations will be given to Jefferson County Community Ministries.

Lambda Chi Alpha will have a canned food drive every spring, and is looking to have another in fall 2017. The groups are always looking for sponsors and partners in the community to help with their philanthropic and community service events. Anyone interested in sponsoring, partnering, holding a collection site, donating or contributing, may contact organization representative Jacob Neterer at 717-830-1858 or by email at jacobrneterer@gmail.com.
