A local fourth grader turned a school social studies assignment into a substantial giving project for the Shepherdstown Day Care Center.

DaMara Hockman, student in Monica Grabowska’s Social Studies class at Shepherdstown Elementary, said she chose the day care center for her community service project assignment because they are a non-profit school.

Hockman was diligent to research the ways in which she could raise money for the day care. She designed and placed boxes around town to collect donations, and held a bake sale and raffle at the Shepherdstown Pharmacy. Hockman collected 102 items such as chalk, crayons, construction paper, scissors and many other classroom supplies, while making a final monetary donation of $353.53 to the day care.

Hockman’s mom, Denise said, “We’re all so proud of her. She really put her ‘all’ into this. She was working too. At the raffle and bake sale, she was counting out change-just helping out in so many ways.”

Raffle items were donated from local Shepherdstown businesses and baked goods were made by day care families and staff, as well as Hockman’s own family.

Hockman has three siblings, all of whom attended the day care, although Hockman herself, did not. She said she enjoyed doing all the work to raise money and would can see herself doing another project like this in the future.
