Happy Retreat festival pairs wine with Charles Town’s best food, jazz

By Staff | May 12, 2017

Join some of Charles Town’s celebrated chefs for wine, jazz music and great food at the Happy Retreat Wine & Jazz Festival 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 10.

More than 50 varieties of wine will be available to sample while Charles Town’s Mediterranean Cafe, Comfort Cuisine’s Marcia Flanagan, Pizza Llama, TheBestCookie.Com. and Sugar Whipped Bakery will provide delicious food for pairings. There will also be craft vendors.

The Wine & Jazz festival also features three virtual wine-tasting classes with author Simone Spinner, an adjunct professor of wine studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Spinner will teach VIP ticket holders online in Happy Retreat’s stately parlors. Three courses, limited to 20 participants each, are available: Hot Trends in Wine; Wine & Music; and Taste Like A Professional.

Charles Town-area performers, The Brooks Tegler Quartet, the Krispy Kat Quartet and the Apollo Jazz Septet, provide the day’s musical accompaniment.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation recognized Happy Retreat as a National Treasure in 2016. It is cared for by the Friends of Happy Retreat, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, that acquired the property in 2015. Proceeds from the festival will help restore the mansion and grounds.
