Morgan Academy to present ‘Pinocchio’ tonight

By Staff | Jun 2, 2017

As the school year draws to a close, Morgan Academy, located at 8505 Shepherdstown Pike, celebrates their students and parents with the 13th annual Family Day production of Pinocchio. The beloved classic by Carlo Collodi is adapted by playwright Kathryn Schultz Miller, and will feature over 40 of the academy’s 60 students.

The remaining students will present a mini play before the start of Pinocchio.

“The kids love doing these productions,” said founder and school director Bernadine Somers. “Family Day is a really big production for us. We have a morning program that is for the school family with 8th grade graduations. Each kid gets a certificate that celebrates them. We recognize kids for their accomplishments throughout the year and there’s a music program; we showcase their art work and things from different classes. We also have a brunch, then we break and go home and come back for the play we’ve been having for the past 13 years.”

Attendance for the play has grown. According to Somers there were close to 200 people at last year’s production.

All the children are in the play and many of them help with the set design and costumes as well.

“Everyone auditions for the play,” Somers said. “It’s a really good experience to audition and have that public speaking exposure. It’s excellent for them to stand in front of an audience at the end of the year, and have that experience of speaking and public performing – no matter how big or small the part is. And we always tell the kids there are no small parts, only small actors. They know that even the tiniest scene can steal the show. We’ve had that happen before because it’s just so funny.”

According to Somers, guest to the play need to be ready for a cute overload.

“When you come to see Pinocchio get ready to see a whole lot of cuteness and get ready to laugh,” she said.

The production is from 7 to 8 p.m., is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served after.
