SHEPHERDSTOWN — John “Jack” and Charlotte Sparks Williams celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Aug. 15, 2024. They were both born in Kent County, Md. and, during high school in Chestertown, Md., “went steady” together. After graduation, Jack joined the Navy, while Charlotte went to nursing school and became an RN. They were married in 1959 in Chestertown, Md. Charlotte worked while Jack earned his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, followed by a master’s degree in economics from the University of Maryland. Jack joined the United States Foreign Service and served in The Netherlands, Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa and Saudi Arabia. Charlotte worked as a nurse whenever possible. They raised their three children mostly overseas: David Williams (Cherilyn) who lives in Gig Harbor, Washington; Laura Hovenier (Jeff) who lives in Pristina, Kosovo; Anna Roberts (Will) who lives in South Jordan, Utah. They now have 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. When Jack retired in 1990, the couple moved to a home in the Willowdale subdivision in Shepherdstown. Jack became a real estate appraiser and he and Charlotte had their appraisal business in Shepherdstown until 2012. They now spend their time doing family history/genealogy research, spending time with family and enjoying life.
