A group of moms and babies with try to set a new world record this weekend, in diaper changing.

Amii Fritz, owner of Up on the Hill and Maria Moser who writes for her own blog, Change-Diapers.com have organized an international cloth diaper changing event, ” The Great Cloth Diaper Change,” here in Shepherdstown.

The plan for the event, which is expected to host around 50 participants, is to best last year’s Guinesss World Record for simultaneous cloth diapers changes and raise awareness about cloth diapering in the modern world and in the local community.

“I don’t really know too many people in our area who cloth diaper,” Moser said.

Originally conceived three years ago as a family-oriented Earth Day event, the worldwide changing this year will take place in 11 countries at 182 sites.

According to Fritz, she and Moser decided Shepherdstown should play host to a changing event of its own as an extension of the work both already do to raise awareness about cloth diapering.

“We thought it would be great to join forces,” Moser said.

The pair who were high school friends, reconnected three years ago at a “nurse in” demonstration held at a local mall.

Soon, the young moms began chatting online and found they had a similar passion for natural birthing and baby products.

“We connected on Facebook and realized how much we have in common still,” Moser said.

An event designed to introduce other area moms to cloth diapering, Fritz said she hopes it also serves to introduce new visitors to Shepherdstown.

“I hope all of Shepherdstown gets a boost from this,” she said.

In addition to raising awareness, Fritz said she’s especially excited to be a part of an official Guinness World Record event.

“Remember when you were a kid. Guinness was such a big deal,” she said.

The event will be held this Saturday, April 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the Shepherdstown Train Station and is free to the pubic.

A raffle will be held for attendees and refreshments will be provided by local cafe Mellow Moods.
