SU offers ’25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’

By Staff | Apr 19, 2013

Theatergoers will not want to miss the production of the Tony-Award winning musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” this weekend, April 20 and 21 at Shepherd University. Show times will be 3 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, and 3 p.m. on Sunday. A musical comedy, Spelling Bee focuses on six quirky adolescents competing for the top spot of a fictitious spelling bee, run by three equally quirky grown-ups. The show is being produced by Shepherd University Scene Stealers, an entirely student-run theater group. “Scene Stealers gives students the opportunity not only to perform, but to direct, choreograph, publicize, and produce one full scale musical production each semester,” according to Brian James, president and founding member of the group.

“Spelling Bee” will be performed in Shepherd’s historic Reynolds Hall theater, located on South King Street across from Shepherdstown town hall. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students, and $7 for Shepherd University students with a valid I.D. Tickets will be available at the door, but advance reservations are suggested. To reserve tickets, patrons may e-mail suscenestealers@gmail.com, including how many tickets and which production they would like to attend. The show is produced through special arrangement with Music Theatre International, and rated PG-13. Don’t miss this hilarious musical and the talents of these SU students this weekend!
