Jazz Band tops in state again

By Staff | Mar 28, 2014

At the West Virginia State Jazz Festival, the Shepherdstown Middle School Jazz Band was named the 2014 Middle School Honor Jazz Ensemble–the best middle school jazz band in the state for the third consecutive year. The SMS Jazz Band traveled to the Wheeling to present an Honor Concert on Mar. 20.

Being chosen an honor band is the highest award the state can bestow upon a musical group.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Shepherdstown Middle School has earned an honor band title and the third year in a row for the SMS Jazz Band.

The Honor Concert in Wheeling was one of many performances by the SMS Jazz Band this year. In addition to performing at the SMS Band Concerts, the jazz band has performed at Asbury United Methodist Church in Shepherdstown, North Jefferson Elementary, Shepherdstown Elementary, the Hedgesville Jazz Festival and the West Virginia Eastern Regional Jazz Festival. The band is looking forward to their annual performance for the Shepherdstown Rotary Club later this spring.

The public is invited to hear this award-winning jazz band at the SMS Spring Concert, which will be presented in the Jefferson High School auditorium on Apr. 23, at 7 p.m.

The Shepherdstown Middle School Jazz Band gratefully acknowledges the help and support they have received from our band parents and chaperones, the faculty, staff and PTO at Shepherdstown Middle, Ms. Rebecca Horn, Mr. William Kerlina, Mrs. Susan Wall, the Jefferson County Board of Education, Studio 105, Ellsworth Music, Progressive Printing, the Shepherdstown Rotary Club, Asbury United Methodist Church, Food Lion, Weis Market, Martins Food Market, the Jane P. Snyder Youth Fund and Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation. The SMS Jazz Band sends out a special thanks to the musicians in our community who work with the jazz students: Mr. John Lynch, Sr., Mr. Jesse Shultzaberger, Mr. Pat Lowry and Mr. Sean Cookus.
