Essentrics exercise class comes to Harmony
A multi-disciplinary exercise program originating in Canada is coming to Harmony Healing Arts Center, 211 E. New St. Shepherdstown, beginning May 3 on Saturdays from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Alicia Ann Garza, a certified Essentrics instructor who teaches the popular program elsewhere in Jefferson and Berkeley counties, will begin with a five-week session and expand it if there is enough interest.
Essentrics is a low-impact exercise program suitable for people of all body types and exercise experience. It draws techniques from a variety of sources, including physiotherapy, ballet, tai chi and yoga. Developed by Sahra and Miranda Esmonde-White of Montreal, essentrics strengthens and stretches muscles eccentrically and re-balances the muscular structure in continuous rotational movements. Miranda has hosted “Classical Stretch” on the PBS network since 1999.
Ms. Garza, a hair-stylist and pet-rescue volunteer, began studying essentrics after giving birth to her first child. She says the program provided her with the tools to get back into shape by losing weight and strengthening and toning her muscles at the same time.
To register for the five-week session, send a check for $50, payable to Harmony, to P.O. Box 1457, Shepherdstown, WV 25443. For more information about the program, please visit (www.essentrics.com) or contact Judy Jenner at 304-876-6918.
