May Day plans underway

Shepherdstown Music and Dance and Shepherdstown Morris invite all to celebrate the magic of a traditional English May on Saturday, May 3. The day’s big event starts with a processional parade down German Street with the Maypole by musicians, morris dancers, mythical figures, may dancers, costumed people, floats, wagons and other (non-motorized) celebratory vehicles to the Rumsey Monument Park. There, all will be invited to join in the revelry of country dancing, maypole dancing, and singing; as well as watching performances of morris dancing, mummers play, spring dances and other related revelry.

The schedule for the May events is as follows: 10 a.m., Morris Dancing performance on the McMurran bricks; 11:30 a.m. line up for May Day Parade on Church Street; 12 noon, parade processional down German Street to McMurran lawn; 12:30-2 p.m., May revelry on McMurran Lawn with performances, dancing and singing; 3:30 p.m., dance performance at the Bavarian Inn; 5 p.m., show dances on King Street; 8 p.m., Country Dance a the War Memorial Building with Adina Gordon calling to the music of Stringrays with Rodney Miller on fiddle, Max Newman on guitar and Stuart Kenny on bass. Beginners Workshop at 7:30 p.m., all dances will be taught. Admission: $10,adults; $7, SMD members; $5 dancing kids under 12.
