William Edward “Pete” Walker

William Edward “Pete” Walker, 87, of Shenandoah Junction, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at his residence.

Born Dec. 14, 1925, in Shepherdstown, he was the son of the late Warren Murray Walker and Elizabeth May Frye Walker.

He was a member of Engle United Methodist Church.

Pete was a Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp, serving in World War II.

He was a prominent dairy farmer in Jefferson County, and was inducted into the WVU Agriculture Hall of Fame. He was past president of West Virginia State Dairy Show at Jackson’s Mill, started the first 4-H Dairy Club in West Virginia and was a 4-H All-Star. He was past president of 4-H Camp Frame and 4-H Foundation. Pete also was a past vice president and member of the Board of Directors Emeritus of the Jefferson County Fair Association. The new Driswood Elementary School was named for his Driswood Farm, and, from the market of Pete’s cattle, livestock exists worldwide with the breeders’ prefix “Driswood.” Locally, he was a member of Jackson-Perks Post No. 71 of the American Legion and Charles Town Moose Lodge No. 948.

Pete is survived by his loving wife, Gloria, at home; one daughter, Barbara Welty and husband, Wayne, of Harpers Ferry; sons, Jarrett M. Walker and wife, Terri, of Harpers Ferry and Edward Todd Walker and wife, Lucrita, of Belvidere, Ill.; stepdaughters, Susan Zombro, of Harpers Ferry and Patricia Wines, of Shenandoah Junction; stepson, John Wines and wife, Bonnie of Phippsburg, Maine; sisters, Eleanor Zombro, of Winchester, Va., and Jane Willingham, of Charles Town; brother, Kenneth Walker, of Charles Town; six grandchildren, Harlan “Herman” Haines, William Haines, Bob Ferrera, Taylor Ferrera, Jasmine Walker and Jack Walker; one great-grandson, Ryland Haines.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris C. Walker; sisters, Margaret Gageby and Viola Boyd; and brothers, Garland, Warren “Dick” and Donald “Butch” Walker.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at the Eackles- Spencer & Norton Funeral Home. Interment was in Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town.
