LaRue Chapman Needy Stanley
LaRue Chapman Needy Stanley, 95, of Martinsburg, and most recently a resident of Canterbury in Shepherdstown, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 at Canterbury Center.
Born on Jan. 28, 1918 in Berkeley County, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Elsye C. Chapman Needy.
She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Shepherdstown.
She was a graduate of Martinsburg High School, Class of 1935, and a graduate of Shepherd University class of 1939. She started her teaching career at Forrest Hill on Arden Road which was a one room school house for grades one through eight. She retired from South Middle School after 38 years of teaching in Berkeley County Schools. She was a member of the Van Clevesville CEOS, WELCA, the Shepherdstown Women’s Club and the UDC.
She is survived by one sister, Nancy E. Needy, Martinsburg; one sister-in-law, Christine Tabler; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred W. Stanley; and one sister, Evelyn N. VanMeter.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 25, at St Peter’s Lutheran Church in Shepherdstown with the Rev. Fred Soltow Jr., officiating. Interment was held at Rosedale Cemetery. Pallbearers were William Griffith, Jeremy Glassford, Mark Hammersla, Charles Stanley, Jim Shipp and James Staley.
