Frances Louise Knode Christman

Frances Louise Knode Christman died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at age 97. She was born Feb. 10, 1916 in Shepherdstown, North Princess Street, the residence of her family. She was the daughter of the late Howard Shirley Knode and Ida Matilda Show Knode Tennant.

Mrs. Christman was a graduate of Shepherd College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Social Studies and Business Education. She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and Kappa Delta Pi Honorary Education Society. She also did graduate study at West Virginia University. She was a Business Education teacher at Hedgesville High School until her marriage in 1942.

Mrs. Christman was a long-time member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown, where she was confirmed at age 13, in 1929. She was a member of the Altar Guild and a volunteer at the Trinity Thrift Shop.

Mrs. Christman was also on the Shepherdstown Housing Authority, a member of the Shepherdstown Historic Commission, and a docent at the Entler Hotel Museum. She was a member of the Shepherdstown United Daughters of the Confederacy, Chapter 128, and a member of The Pack Horse Ford Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John H.K. Christman and wife Patricia, and Stephen S. Christman and wife, Carol Anne; five grandchildren, Claire C. Hemming and husband Major Lee W. Hemming USMC, Rev. K. Virginia Christman and husband Allen S. Brown, Sara E. Hammond and husband Gregory W. Hammond, Stephen B. Christman, and Adam L.S. Christman; two great grandchildren, Liza Claire Hemming and Jackson William Hammond.

Frances was the widow of the late Adolphus V. “Chris” Christman, who for 30 years was a Sr Technical Sales Rep for Eastman Kodak Co., Rochester, N.Y. They lived in New Orleans, La., Memphis, Tenn., Pittsburgh, Pa. and Bethesda, Md., having moved back to Shepherdstown in 1971 at Mr. Christman’s retirement.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown with Dr. G.T. Schramm and Rev. Frank Coe officiating.

Interment was at Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown.
