Charles William Custer

Charles William Custer, 67, of Charles Town, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Winchester, Va., Medical Center.

Born Aug. 21, 1946, in Shepherdstown, he was the son of William Lee Custer and Fannie E. Custer; and the stepson of Mary R. Custer.

Mr. Custer retired after 39 years with Ashworth Brothers of Winchester, Va., as a shipping analyst.

He was a member of Zion Episcopal Church. Charles served as a member of Zion’s vestry, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and acolyte father in his time at Zion.

He was a graduate of Charles Town High School, class of 1964 and had attended Shepherd College for two years.

He was a member of the Jefferson County Jaycees and Charles Town Jaycees. He served as JCI Senator, National Jaycees.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Rebecca Vickers Custer, at home; children, Christopher Aaron Custer and wife, Stephanie, of Shenandoah Junction and John W. Vickers Custer, of Charles Town; grandchild, Kyle Custer; sister-in-law, Peggy Coulter and husband, Jack; nieces, Patricia Coulter Grove and husband, Chris and Jaclynn Coulter Courtney and husband, Jason; and great-nephews, Andrew Grove and Ashton Courtney.

In addition to his parents and stepmother, he was preceded in death by his stepsister, Ginger Bordier.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Zion Episcopal Church, 300 E. Congress St., Charles Town, with the Rev. Melanie McCarley officiating. Interment was private.

Arrangements were by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.
