William (Bill) Joseph Hansbury Jr.

Loving husband and father William (Bill) Joseph Hansbury Jr., 79, of Shepherdstown passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at the Canterbury Center.

Born Jan. 18, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late William Joseph Hansbury and Catherine Moran Hansbury.

Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had been employed by FEMA and retired from the Veterans Administration as a national program manager for natural and technological hazards.

In 1983, Bill was instrumental in establishing the Emergency Management degree program at the University of North Texas, the first degree program of its kind in the United States.

Bill enjoyed traveling, spending time with his family and competing in trivia competitions.

He graduated from La Salle College High School, and received his B.S. degree from Villanova University.

He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Anne Wilkinson Hansbury; four children, Jennifer H. McKenna, of Hellertown, Pa., William J. Hansbury III, of Denton, Texas, Alison M. Fleck, of Allentown, Pa., and Brendan J. Hansbury, of Shepherdstown; three grandsons, William Joseph Hansbury IV, Daniel Sean Hansbury and David Hansbury Fleck; and sister, Mary T. Hansbury, of Philadelphia, Pa.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Anne Marie Hansbury.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 106 South Duke St., Shepherdstown, with the Rev. T. Mathew Rowgh, celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Denton Diamonds Special Olympics Team: 3312 Meadowlark Lane, Denton TX 76209 or St. Agnes Catholic Church Building Fund: 106 S Duke St., Shepherdstown WV 25443.
