David Dale McClung

David Dale McClung, 69, of Martinsburg, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014, of a sudden, massive heart attack.

Born in Rupert, on June 30, 1944, he was the youngest and seventh child of Fitzgerald and Marguerite Yoakum McClung.

He graduated as salutatorian of his class from Rupert High School in 1962, at the age of 17. Upon graduation, he came to Shepherdstown to attend Shepherd College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education as a McMurran Scholar in 1965. That same year, he also was the head teacher of the pilot Head Start program. He became a teacher at Hedgesville Elementary and went on to earn a master’s degree in Education from Shippensburg University in 1968. In 1969, he received his certificate of administration from Western Maryland College and became principal at Hedgesville Elementary, where he stayed for 29 years. June 19, 1969, he married Roxanna Kay Walker McClung. In the early 90s, he was principal of West Seaford Elementary School in Seaford, Del. Missing West Virginia, he returned to the area in 1992, and finished his career in education with Frederick County School System in Virginia, first at Indian Hollow Elementary School, then Stonewall Elementary School, where he retired in June 2006.

In recent years, he worked for the West Virginia Division of Tourism at the Marlowe Rest Area on the southbound side of 81, cheerfully educating travelers on West Virginia and the local area.

His life revolved around his family. He is survived by a daughter, Heather and her fiance, Ed Dorsey, of Inwood; a son, James Nathan McClung and wife, Tanya, and their children, Hope Musa, Mark McClung, Tessa Dusek, Anastasia Dusek, and Olivia McClung, all of Martinsburg. Also he is survived by his sister, Frances Gladwell and niece, Martha Jordan and family of Bedington; and numerous extended family members.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at Brown Funeral Home with Pastor Eddie Edmonds officiating. Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
