Jimmy E. Kessel
Jimmy E. Kessel, 78, of Shepherdstown, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2014, at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Born February 12, 1936 in Petersburg, he was the son of the late Otto Kessel and Katherine (Lewis) Kessel.
Mr. Kessel was member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Shepherdstown. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Martinsburg Council #1169.
Mr. Kessel was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Jimmy taught biology and physical education in the Jefferson County School system for 33 years, initially at Shepherdstown High School. As its coach in 1970, the Shepherdstown Cardinals won the West Virginia state baseball championship which was the first time that a single-A team had done so. He later coached football at Jefferson High School the team went 7-3 in the first year of consolidation and later coached at Washington High School. In addition to baseball he coached basketball and football at Shepherdstown. He was a member of the Petersburg High School Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife, Ann (Piccola) Bracey Litt Kessel; two sons, Joseph V. Kessel and wife, Dee Dee, of Harpers Ferry and AE Kessel, of New York; one daughter, Therese A. Hall and husband, Buck, of Baltimore, Maryland; two step-children, Emily Litt Halla and husband, Jeff, Anthony F. Litt IV and wife, Danielle, all of Green Bay, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Adrian B., Adam S., and Aaron J. Kessel, Christine M. Hall. Jasmine and Addison, granddaughter, Vivian is yet to be born and due any day now; one great-grandson, Liam Kessel; one sister, Elaine Inskeep and husband, Phil, and daughter, Stacey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, JoAnn R. Kessel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Saturday, June 28, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 106 South Duke Street, Shepherdstown, with Rev. T. Mathew Rowgh as the celebrant. Military graveside services will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Shepherdstown.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the church. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m.
