Ruth deWindt Hoxton

Ruth deWindt Hoxton, 97, of Shepherdstown, West Virginia passed away at her home on Oct. 17, 2014.

Born April 24, 1917 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Delano deWindt and Ruth Church deWindt of Great Barrington.

Mrs. Hoxton married Archibald R. Hoxton, Jr. of Alexandria, Virginia on Aug. 16, 1941 and began a wonderful 61 year partnership which included postings as head of The Fairfield Country Day School, Fairfield, Connecticut, The Green Vale School, Glen Head, Long Island, New York and The Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Virginia.

After retirement in 1981, the Hoxtons moved to the family home, Fruit Hill, near Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

For many years, Mrs. Hoxton was active in various local charities including those at Trinity Episcopal Church and The Entler Hotel. She was a member of The Junior League, The Garden Club of Virginia and The Colonial Dames of America, Chapter XXIII-Virginia.

She is survived by her children and their families: Ann Hoxton Taylor and husband, Michael F. Taylor, Archibald R. Hoxton, III and wife Constance C. Hoxton; grandchildren Anna S. Taylor and Leah M. Taylor, Archibald R. Hoxton, IV and wife, Mary Logan and Frederick C. Hoxton and wife, Kim; great grandchildren Archibald R. Hoxton, V and Payton Hoxton, Alexandra Hoxton and Caroline Hoxton.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown on Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown, or to Hospice of the Panhandle or to The Ruth and Flick Hoxton Scholarship Fund at The Episcopal High School, 1200 N. Quaker Lane, Alexandria, Virginia 22302.
