David L. Lewis

Dec 19, 2014

David L. Lewis passed away Dec. 9, 2014, at his home.

He was born July 7, 1948, in Hagerstown, Maryland, the son of Alice Shank Lewis Kolb and the late Edgar James Lewis.

A native of Sharpsburg, Maryland, Dave graduated in 1966 from Boonsboro High School, where he was a star football player and where he met his wife of 46 years, the former Jacqueline Bailey.

Dave graduated from Shepherd College in 1973, with a degree in education.

He followed that with a Masters in Health and Safety Education. While at Shepherd, he was a member of the football team.

Dave left school in 1968, to join the Army Reserves and served seven years, finishing his degree at Shepherd while serving.

He continued his love for football while serving in the Army by playing on the Hagerstown Bears, a semi-professional football team that competed along the eastern seaboard. In 1969, he was named the team’s Most Valuable Player, which was quite an accomplishment for an offensive tackle.

Dave worked at General Motors in Martinsburg for 19 years. While working at GM, Dave started DL Lewis Construction Company in 1976. In 1989, his close friend Paul Wilmoth joined him and together they built DL Lewis Construction into a premier local custom home building company.

Dave was an avid sportsman. He loved to hunt and he loved the outdoors. He passed along this love to his sons, Eric, Brad and Brett. Dave was also very active in all of the boys’ activities. After working long days at GM or on the job site, he would still find time to coach teams, attend games and volunteer in other ways. Dave never missed one of his sons’ youth or high school games on the baseball diamond or football field. He left his sons a wonderful example to follow in this regard.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1965.

In addition to his mother, Alice, Dave is survived by his loving wife, Jackie; sons, Eric and his wife Joy, Brad and his wife, Jainee, and Brett and his wife, Elizabeth. He was absolutely devoted to his grandchildren, Chandler and Maclaine (Eric and Joy’s kids), Sophie and Kate (Brett and Elizabeth’s kids) and Bailey and Cameron (Brad and Jainee’s kids). He was very proud of all of them. He is also survived by his brother, Paul Edgar “Ed” Lewis.

A gathering of friends and family washeld from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12 at the Shepherdstown Fire Department.

Memorial contributions are requested to the Shepherdstown Fire Department, one of Dave’s favorite local organizations and the providers of very thoughtful care to Dave; and the Shepherdstown Public Library’s expansion project, as Dave was a prolific reader.
