Dr. James Keith Leverett

Dr. James Keith Leverett, Ed.D, 60, of Harpers Ferry, passed away Monday, June 22, 2015, at the Veterans Medical Center in Martinsburg.

Born July 29, 1954, in Lexington, North Carolina, he was the son of Sarah Bohannon Leverett and the late Rev. Dr. Ulysses Grant Leverett.

James was a life-long Christian and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Shepherdstown, and president of the Martin-Leverett Association Inc.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War era with the 5th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

James was a graduate of Shepherd University, class of 1996, and was awarded a Master’s degree in counseling and a Dolerite in Education from Bowie State University. He was employed at the U.S. Job Corp in Harpers Ferry as lead counselor.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Nancy Lowe Leverett; two daughters, Toneka Wright and Gwendolyn Beaufort; three sisters, Pamela Leverett, Cheryl Lide and Gwendolyn Gona; three brothers, Ulysses Bernard, Stanley and Kevin Leverett; four granddaughters; four grandsons; one great-grandson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and colleagues.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 29, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 4257 Kearneysville Pike, Shepherdstown, with the Rev. Rudy M. Bropleh officiating.

Interment was at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, in the West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton.
