Carrol Edward Kline

Carrol Edward Kline, 90, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, July 4, 2015, at Berkeley Medical Center.

Born Aug. 10, 1924, in Hagerstown, Maryland, he was the son of the late Harvey Denton and Francis Jane Lucretia (Moats) Kline.

Carrol was a graduate of Hagerstown High School. He also graduated from Shepherd College, Indiana State University and Shippensburg University, where he received a master’s degree. He retired in 1984 as a social studies teacher at South Hagerstown High School.

Carrol was a veteran of the United States Army Aircorp during World War II, where he was a fighter and bomber pilot. He was a member of the Maryland Wing of the Civil Air Patrol. He owned his own airplane and would take students for rides, who later became pilots themselves.

Carrol was a civil war buff and participated in reenactments of the Battle of Antietam as a Confederate colonel. He participated in the Cavalry honor ride on horseback from Martinsburg to Mercersburg. Another passion of his was writing poetry. He was a published poet and the co-founder of the poetry club, Athens on the Opequon.

Carrol was a very active man. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hagerstown; Funkstown American Legion; Ali Ghan Shrine of Cumberland; Hagerstown Forest No. 95 Tall Cedars of Lebanon; AF&AM Masonic Lodge in Hagerstown No. 217; and the Middle Atlantic Region Skirmishers in Winchester, Virginia.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Ellen “Tudy” (Wareham) Kline, whom he married Aug. 15, 1953; two nephews, Thomas Alexander and Keith Kline; three nieces, Linda Golden, Arlene Alexander and Rebecca Kline; a brother-in-law, Edward A. “Bud” Wareham; and several other extended family and friends.

Carrol was the last of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Robert Kline; and a sister, Phyllis Alexander.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2015, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
