Dr. George Wendell Johnson
Dr. George Wendell Johnson passed away Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015.
George grew up in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and East Hartford, Connecticut and spent his adult life in Marblehead, Massachusetts and Stafford County, Virginia. Dr. Johnson and his wife had recently moved to Shepherdstown to be near his two youngest children.
George served in the Navy during World War II and the Army during the Korean War.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York and his Ph.D from the University of Connecticut. During his career with IBM, he worked on the space program and in the development of sonar devices for submarines. He retired from IBM in 1987.
He was an avid skier, sailor, golfer and bridge player.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joyce C. Johnson; his children, Steven Johnson, Lynne Johnson Grynkewicz, Beth Rehberger and Diance Fulton; and his sister, Elaine Johnson Bohner.
A service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23 at Aquia Episcopal Church, 2938 Jefferson Davis Highway, Stafford, Virginia.
