Helen Jyne Hodgson Miller

Helen Jyne Hodgson Miller died on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015 at the Hospice of the Panhandle with her daughter and granddaughter by her side.

Born June 25, 1925 at the family farm in Tremont, Illinois, Helen was the last surviving sibling of the twelve children of Louise Grubb Hodgson and Leonard Boone Hodgson.

Helen married George T. Miller in 1946 in Illinois, moved to Silver Spring, Maryland and assisted with operation of Miller’s Garage in Kensington, Md. She was a Boy Scout Den mother and active PTA member during her children’s school years. Later she was employed at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, DC then moved to Boonsboro, Maryland in the early 70’s, working at Mather Training Center in Harpers Ferry. She also operated a hydroponic greenhouse in partnership with Nancy McCaslin (M & M Salad Farmers), producing tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers. Helen’s last employment was as a rural mail carrier working out of Hagerstown and Boonsboro, Maryland post offices.

Upon retirement, Helen lived in Falling Waters, WV, before moving into assisted living memory care residences in Hagerstown, Md. in 2009. The family thanks the many loving care givers that supported her during these years.

Helen possessed a cheerful personality, bright smile and strong work ethic. She enjoyed gardening and was known for her scrumptious pies, cookies and breads. She was an active church member of the Church of Christ, Scientist in Chevy Chase, Maryland, Frederick, Maryland and Shepherdstown.

Helen is survived by children John (Jack) Miller and wife Cena of E. Peoria, Illinois, Robert (Bob) Miller and wife Dawn of Reedsport, Oregon, and Jane M. Tabb and husband Cam of Kearneysville. She was the proud grandmother of ten and great grandmother of 12.

Visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 09 at the funeral home

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, with Bob Snipes, C.S. and Pastor Nancy Tabb officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Glendale Memorial Gardens, Pekin, Illinois.

To honor Helen, donations to the Christian Science Society of Shepherdstown, PO Box 176, Shepherdstown, WV 25443 or Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430 are preferred in lieu of flowers.
