Alice Anne Sperow
Alice Anne Sperow entered into her eternal life on Dec. 14, following a three month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born June 18, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Charles Billmyer Sperow Sr. and Alice Belle Maddex.
She is survived by two siblings, Charles B. Sperow Jr. and wife, Sylvia Gehri Sperow and Virginia S. Butler and husband, Robert. An older brother died at birth.
Anne was a graduate of Martinsburg High School, class of 1948. She graduated from Shepherd College in 1952 with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught her first year at Bedington Elementary School. Later she taught in private schools in Akron, Ohio and Miami, Florida. She returned to Berkeley County where she retired after teaching at Tuscarora and Berkeley Heights Elementary.
In her youth, Anne was active in the 4-H community. She was a member of the Mt. Airy Winners 4-H Club, where she received both a Charting and an All-Star pin for her leadership in the 4-H program and community. She attended the 1946 National 4-H Convention in Chicago, Illinois, after winning the West Virginia State Complete Costume Sewing Award.
She was an integral part of the life stories of her nieces and nephews, David, Mark, Kathy (Ritchie), Margaret and Jean (Hilgers) Sperow; and Anne (Deardorff), Terry (Miller), Elaine (Bobo) and Becky (Daniel) Butler. Two nephews preceded her in death, Leslie Sperow and David Butler. Great Anne, as she was known by the next generation, will be missed by numerous great- nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at Arden United Methodist Church. The Rev. Sarah Schliekert and Margaret Sperow will be presiding.
Because Anne was an avid reader and had lifelong connections with Shepherdstown, donations in her memory may be made to the Shepherdstown Public Library, P.O. Box 278, Shepherdstown, WV 25443.
