John Nathan Flick
John Nathan Flick, 88, passed away Feb. 6, 2016.
He was born March 4, 1927, to Edgar F. and Retha (Kees) Flick, in Martinsburg.
He graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1945, attended Brown University (he was a member of the football team), attended Shepherd University (also played football), and he graduated from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. John served in the United States Army for 23 years (20 years Active Duty and three years in the West Virginia National Guard) and he retired as a lieutenant colonel. John was a combat veteran of World War II and the Vietnam War. He served three tours in Germany.
After his retirement from the Army, John became an educator for 20 years with the Frank Ohl Middle School in Austintown, Ohio. He married the former Ida Lee Thornburg on Feb. 7, 1950.
John is survived by his wife, Ida Lee; his children, Dale M. (Barbara) Flick, Donna Marie Flick, and Dohn M. (Donna Lynne) Flick; his three grandchildren, Jennifer, Brigitte, and Ian; and his great-grandson, Henry.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his seven siblings, Benjamin, Willis, Clarence, Donald, Paul, Virginia and Nell.
A funeral service was held Thursday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel and Cemetery, 917 Cemetery Road, Martinsburg Burial followed with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of one’s choice.
