Shirley Irene Johnston Vaughn

Shirley Irene Johnston Vaughn, 89, of Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, and formerly of Shepherdstown, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2016.

Born Aug. 10, 1926, in Arnold, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Beyer Shaw and Velma Gillis Johnston.

She was a retired Boonsboro High School physical education teacher and coach.

She graduated from New Kensington High School in 1944 and went on to earn her BA degree from Shepherd College and her MA degree from West Virginia University.

She was a member of Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church, the Washington County Maryland State Retired Teacher Association, the AAUW, and the Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

She is survived by four daughters, Lynda Hart and husband, William, of Nashville, Tennessee, Leslie Byers and husband, Michael, of Nashville; Pamela Johnson and husband, Nicholas, of Fairfield, Pennsylvania; and Paula Vaughn, of Huntington; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Johnston and George Johnston.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Brown Funeral Home.

Graveside services were held Monday, March 7 at 11 a.m. At Greenwood Memorial Cemetery, in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania.
