Charles Martin Carter, Jr., 89, died Thursday, April 14, 2016, in Jefferson County, as a result of an automobile accident.

Born June 24, 1926, in Jefferson County, he was the son of the late Charles M. Carter Sr. and Annabel Dailey Carter.

Charles was a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne, in the United States Army, and served during World War II.

In his early life, he worked for Fairchild Aircraft and Boeing/Vertol Aircraft Corporation, as an aircraft electrician. He owned and operated Jefferson Ridge Tavern in Shepherdstown; alongside his wife.

He was a gunsmith and enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Clara M. “Pat” Carter, who passed away in 2014.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Eyler; and husband, Chuck, of Port Charlotte, Florida, and Carla Schianodicola, and husband, Lenny, of Hagerstown, Maryland; one stepson, Richard Brant and wife, Linda, of Martinsburg; eight grandchildren, Kaysi McQuain of Martinsburg, Andrew Senecal of Port Charlotte, Florida, Rebekah, Jared, Libby and Leah Brant, all of Martinsburg, and Raimondo and Giulianna Schianodicola of Hagerstown; and three great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at Brown Funeral Home.

A celebration of life was held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 20 at the First Baptist Church, Martinsburg, with Pastor Ed Taylor officiating. Interment was private.
