Reuben Lucien Swope
Reuben Lucien Swope, 78, of Shepherdstown, passed away Friday, April 22, 2016, at Berkeley Medical Center.
Born Jan. 9, 1938 in Shepherdstown, he was the son of the late Walter M. and Ruth L. Breeden Swope.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Shepherdstown. He was a graduate of Shepherdstown High School class of 1957.
He retired after 38 years of service with the maintenance department at Shepherd University.
Reuben was a strongly independent gentleman, who put others first and enjoyed spending time with his family. As an avid outdoorsman, he was a lifelong hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ann Elizabeth Whittington Swope; one daughter, Della Marie Swope-Collins; four grandchildren, Katherine McDowell, Amanda Maddox, Russell Collins and Christina Collins; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Swope of Stephens City, Virginia; and one sister, Lena Grim, of Winchester, Virginia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Martin Swope; and two sisters, Anna May Richardson and Isabelle Swope.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. today at Brown Funeral Home. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
