Eleanor Ann Shirley

Eleanor Ann Shirley, 85, of Shenandoah Junction died Friday, July 22, 2016 at Jefferson Medical Center, Ranson, WV.

Born Sept. 7, 1930 in Charles Town. She was the daughter of the late Roy Jefferson Shirley and Esther Virginia (Nichols) Shirley.

Ms. Shirley taught Mathematics, Driver Education, Physical Education and Coached the Girl’s Basketball Team at Martinsburg High School for 17 years. Also, Student Council Advisor and spent eight years as a Mathematics and Science Supervisor for Berkeley County and Elementary Supervisor and Director of Elementary Schools in Jefferson County where she retired in 1989 and taught part time at Shepherd College.

She was a Life-Long Member Uvilla United Methodist Church where she served as Chairman of the Administrative Board and Church Organist. She was also a Member of the Uvilla United Methodist Women serving as Treasurer.

Graduate of Shepherdstown High School, class of 1947, Shepherd College, class of 1951 where she received her AB and BS Degrees in Mathematics and Physical Education and was a member of the Phi Sigma Chi Sorority and the Kappa Delta Pi National Educational Honorary Society. Ms. Shirley later earned her Master’s Degree in Supervision and Administration from Western Maryland College. She did Graduate work at West Virginia University, Marshall University and the University of Maryland. She was voted into Who’s Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Member of the Phi Sigma Sorority Alumni Association where she served as Secretary, Past President of Eta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (Honorary Society for Women Educators) served on various committees and was treasurer. Past Recording Secretary and Second Vice-President of Alpha Phi State Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Past Worthy Matron of Shepherdstown Chapter #155, Order of Eastern Star, Also serving as Past Associate Matron, Star Point, and Organist, Past Member of National , State, and Regional Associations for Supervision and Curriculum Development in which she held various offices. Also Past Member National, State and County Education Associations.

She is survived by a number of cousins.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her life-long friend and companion, Emmert E. Moler, Jr.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 27 at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town with Dr. Parker Hinzman officiating.

Interment was in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.
