M. June Summerfield Leasure
M. June Summerfield Leasure, formerly of Saint James, Maryland went to be with the Lord on July 28, 2016 after a long life of sweet service to others.
She was born in Cumberland, Maryland on Sept. 7, 1921 to Lyda P. Swartzwelder Summerfield and Alfred S. Summerfield.
Her memoirs describe a happy childhood centered on a blissful family life and a significant spiritual contribution to community and church.
She started her career as a life-long church organist and pianist at age 7 and was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church, Cresaptown, Maryland.
She graduated from Allegheny High School in 1939, and attended Practical Bible Training School in Binghamton, New York until 1942.
She served during war-time for the Celanese Corporation formerly of Cresaptown, Maryland, a strategic manufacturer of military fabrics. She met her husband, Bernard D. Leasure, shortly after his return from World War II, where he served as a combat engineer in the 209th Battalion of the prestigious Merrill’s Marauders.
They were married in 1947 and began a life of shared adventure and service focused on family, church, and community.
Together June and Bernie served in several states as public school teacher and homemaker eventually arriving in Washington County, Maryland. They established Leasure’s Driving School.
They were active and devoted Christians and assisted in establishing and building local churches. After retirement and raising their four children, June and her husband toured all 50 states while visiting family and making new friends.
She was a member of Evangel Baptist Church in Hagerstown. She was a lifelong lap swimmer and member of the YMCA Senior Swim of Hagerstown. In recent years, she was a resident of Somerford of Hagerstown, where she gave and received the love and care of many new friends both residents and staff. Special mention to Hospice of Washington County for exemplary service in her end of life transition.
June was preceded in death by her husband Bernard on October 10, 2010; brothers Richard and David Summerfield; and a granddaughter, Lindsey Leasure. She is survived by her four children: Yvonne Leasure of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania; Jonathan Leasure of Clearwater, Florida; Mark Leasure and wife Kim of St. James, Maryland; Beth Leasure-Hudson and husband Michael Hudson of Shepherdstown.
She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Amy Roberts, Benjamin and Tara Leasure, Andrew and Katty Leasure, Allison and Robert Hammond, Samantha & Jesse Crumpton, and Jennifer and Dave MacDonald. June was also loved by her 13 great-grandchildren; Sky, Cole, Noah, Gabriel, Iliana, Reagan, Camillia, Lucille, Charlotte, Sebastian, Charles, Lincoln, and most recent namesake, Kataleya June.
She was most beloved for her calm and sweet presence, sense of style, and inspiration as a pianist/ organist so that others may rejoice and sing – both literally in praise to God and figuratively in assisting others toward life’s best moments.
A viewing will be held from 9-11a.m at Minnich Funeral Home with funeral services to follow at 11a.m. on Monday, Aug. 8. Internment is at Rose Hill Cemetery. A reception at Evangel Baptist Church will follow.
