L. Elmer Vickers, Jr.

L. Elmer Vickers, Jr., 87, of Kearneysville, passed away Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016, at the Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility with loved ones and special care providers close.

He was born April 11, 1929, in Jefferson County. He was the son of Charlotte M. Gross Vickers and Lawrence E. Vickers.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Mary Catherine Moler Vickers who died March 7, 2013.

He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte M. Vickers, of Shenandoah Junction; two sons, Lawrence E. Vickers, III and wife Debbie, of Kearneysville and John L. Vickers and wife Lydia, of Kearneysville; five grandchildren, Mary Beth Group and husband Bobby, Larnie Vickers and wife Samantha, Amy C. Vickers, Catherine Vickers and Matthew Vickers; three great-grandchildren, Ty Vickers, Kendall Vickers, Bailey Group and brother-in-law, Fred T. Moler and wife Helen, Martinsburg.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his daughter, Florence Ann Vickers, brother-in-law, Emmert G. Moler, Jr. and special friend, Eleanor Ann Shirley.

He was the last of his immediate family.

Elmer, as most knew him was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and lifelong dairy farmer having owned and operated with his family, Locust Grove Farm, His day was not complete unless he made it to the barn or the “Boys” updated him of their progress.

Elmer was a graduate of Shepherdstown High School, class of 1946 and attended Shepherd College.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Shepherdstown where he was very active in the past, serving as Trustee and Council Member.

Elmer was very active with the Milk Coop. serving many years. Member of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau; Jefferson County Fair Board, receiving the honor of Director Emeritus, FHA and was a WV 4-H All Star.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Shepherdstown with the Rev. Karen Valentine officiating.

Interment was in the Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.
