Rebecca “Becky” Jane Shaffer
Rebecca “Becky” Jane Shaffer, 76, life-long resident of Berkeley County passed away on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016 at her residence in Shepherdstown with her beloved partner, Diane Steece at her side.
Born Nov. 22, 1939 in Baltimore, Maryland she was the daughter of the late Fred and Margaret Tressel Shaffer.
Becky had been a high school English and Physical Education teacher; executive director of Meals on Wheels; and had been an athletic director at Camp Louise in Thurmont, Maryland. She was an all-around first rate human being. While teaching at Shepherdstown High School she served in roles as diverse as advisor to the cheerleading team.
Becky worked to preserve the history of the county and was a member of Historic Shepherdstown and the Jefferson County Historical Society. She was also a reporter of local news for the Spirit of Jefferson newspaper. She ran the Free Wheelers Horse and Buggy Club for 18 years. She was an avid reader and gardener.
She was a 1961 graduate of Shepherd College where she had been a member of the Tri Sigma Sorority.
It is anyone’s guess how many thousands upon thousands of meals were delivered to people in Berkeley County during her years of service as executive director of the Meals on Wheels program there.
In addition to her partner, she is survived by her brother, Jim Shaffer.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Mt. View Cemetery at a later date.
