Sonjia Marie Yancey
Sonjia Marie Yancey, 38, of Martinsburg, born in Bluefield, West Virginia, went to be with the Lord Nov. 30, 2016.
Sonjia was a 1996 graduate of Martinsburg High School.
She was on the swim team during her younger years. She was also on the girls’ basketball team, girls’ softball team, and the track team. Sonjia played recreational girls’ softball at Charlotte Prather Park from age 6 to age 18. She was also on a traveling softball team.
Sonjia graduated from Martinsburg High School with an academic scholarship to Marshall University, where she was studying to become a nurse. She also attended Shepherd University.
She had a beautiful smile and loved to sing gospel music. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Sonjia leaves behind three children who she loved dearly, Capri, Falcan, and Xerxees; her beloved mother, Rosie Yancey; her sisters, Lisa Yancey, Angela Yancey Mitchell, and Tabitha Yancey; several nephews and nieces, Juan Yancey, Alexus Yancey, Daizia Yancey, Trey Henry, Christin Yancey, Tevon Yancey, Sinzir Yancey, and Leon Yancey III; one great-nephew, Wyatt Clift; a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins; and a very close friend, Brenda Orr.
She was preceded in death by her older brother, Leon T. Yancey Jr.; her daddy, Leon T. Yancey Sr.; and her grandparents, Ralph and Irene Burkhalter and Sherman and Merlene Dudley.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 10 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Interment was in Greenhill Cemetery.
