William Grantham

Apr 4, 2017

William Gibson Grantham, of Tudor Hall Farm, Middleway, passed away at Winchester Medical Center on Friday, March 24, 2017, at the age of 65 due to complications of ALS.

William is predeceased by his parents, James Amon Grantham and Nell Fleu Grantham.

William is lovingly remembered by his wife of 41 years, Phyllis B Grantham; brother, J. Amon Grantham Jr.; daughter, Natalie Grantham Friend and son-in-law, Randy Friend; daughter, Olivia Grantham Mooney and son-in-law, C.T. Mooney; grandchildren, Nell Friend, Lew Friend, Sam Friend, and Hunter Mooney; as well as loving niece, nephews and other relatives.

William was born Sept. 24, 1951, in Winchester, Virginia. He graduated from Charles Town High School in 1970 and went on to study at Shepherd College, where he met his wife Phyllis. He farmed the land of Tudor Hall Farm his entire life.

Known to many as Billy, William was a staple at many farmers markets in the area for over 30 years. He was a founder of the Sunday farmers market in Shepherdstown. His booming voice and laugh were more of an indication of the start of market then the bells of McMurran Hall.

William also spent many Saturdays at the Shepherdstown Post Office providing produce and meats to members of our community. Regardless of the weather, he was there with a Cheshire grin and a yes ma’am to warm his patrons on even the coldest of days.

The receiving of friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 30, 2017, at Melvin T. Strider Colonel Funeral Home, 310 S. Fairfax Blvd., Ranson.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. March 31, 2017, at Grace Episcopal Church, 159 East St., Middleway, with the Rev. Susan MacDonald and Robert E. Shives officiating. Fellowship and Celebration of Life will take place directly after the service at Grantham Hall, 112 East St., Middleway, WV 25430.
