Harold W. Snyder
Harold W. Snyder, 94, passed away Aug. 5, 2017, after living a long and fulfilling life.
Born in 1923, he was the son of Harold and Stella Snyder and was raised in Washington, D.C. As a cartographer, Harold mapped his way through life – from creating maps for bombing runs in the Pacific during World War II, to mapping the moon for the Apollo missions.
Harold married Madge Smith in 1946, and raised a family of four children in Silver Spring, Maryland. After a life-long career with the U.S. Army Map Service, Harold retired with Madge to Shepherdstown, where they were active participants in the town they grew to love. They found a welcoming community as members of Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church and the Men’s Club. Harold enthusiastically supported the Visitor’s Center as well. They finally had time to travel as Harold documented his experiences with his camera, another passion of his. After the sad passing of Madge at 58, Harold remarried for a time, continued travelling and enjoying retirement in Shepherdstown.
Throughout the years, Harold maintained relationships with his AMS friends, serving in various offices of the Association of Mapping Seniors and as the long-time editor of AMS News. At 94, he was still collecting articles of interest for that publication.
Harold will be joining Madge at Elmwood Cemetery in Shepherdstown. He leaves behind his children, Stephen, Gary, Karen and Keith; daughters-in-law, Joanne and Cindy; and granddaughters, Erin and Megan.
Enjoy a bowl of ice cream in Harold’s memory. Donations can be made to Homewood of Williamsport or your favorite charity.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, 2017, at Brown Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at the First Presbyterian Church in Shepherdstown with the Rev. Jeffrey L. Shull officiating.
