Lowell H. Writt
Lowell Hartman Writt, age 86, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, at the Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Hospice and Palliative Care Unit.
He was born at home on May 4, 1931, on the Gardner Farm outside of Shepherdstown, to the late Charles Curtis Writt and Myrtle Iva Mae Costella.
Early in his life, the family moved to the current Writt family farm located on River Road where he grew up enjoying life on the Potomac River. While working on the farm, he learned to love all animals and the country life.
He graduated from Shepherdstown High School, class of 1949, and served his country in the Army during the Korean War, stationed in Ethiopia and the Pentagon. Skills he learned in the military lead him to a long federal government career at East Coast Relay Station and numerous management positions with the 7th Signal Command, Fort Richie, Maryland, in the fields of computer operations and communications.
His love of all growing things also extended to operating a successful hog farm, thriving garden, a beautiful yard full of flowers, shrubs, trees and a beautiful quiet fish pond.
Wanting to stay near his roots and his love of Jefferson County, he kept a home here all his life within a few miles of where he was born. During his travels to 48 out of the 50 states, Pawleys Island, South Carolina stole his heart, which he called his heavenly home on earth. There he loved long walks on the beach with his wife and beloved Pom-a-poo, Elvis, just enjoying the natural beauty of this coastal area.
A faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown, he also attended All Saints Anglican Parish in Pawleys Island.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Margaret D Writt (Dean), of Harpers Ferry; and first wife, Mary Fowler, of Baker Heights; son, Terry (Diane) Writt, of Gerrardstown; daughter, Kathy (Jim) Armstrong, of Gerrardstown; and stedaughter, Margaret (Joe) Showe, of Charles Town; five grandchildren, Curtis, Heather, Jennifer, Sarah and Ariel; three great-grandsons, Kaiden, Karson and Gabriel; brother, John Writt, of Shepherdstown; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents; daughter, Mary Ann Duncan; granddaughter, Tracey Duncan; brothers, Curtis and Donald Writt; sisters, Myra Kennedy Martin, Ann Mills and Mary Liz Frazier.
Per his final request, a private celebration of his life will be held. The family request in lieu of flowers a memorial contribution be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 308, Shepherdstown, WV 25443
