Steven C. Smallwood

Steven Craig Smallwood, 66, of Martinsburg went into eternal life Friday, Sept. 22, 2017.

Born March 22, 1951 in Charles Town he is the son of Frances Yurish Smallwood and the late Wallace Eugene Smallwood, Sr.

He was a 1969 graduate of Martinsburg High School and attended Shepherd College. From his early childhood he was always involved with sports. A gifted athlete, in junior high and high school he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track, receiving many awards. As an adult he played fast and slow pitch softball developing many lasting friendships over the years.

One of Steve’s first jobs was a car salesman with Godfrey VW in Winchester. He enjoyed the challenge of the “deal”, and helping friends to get the car they needed. He worked for the United States Postal Service starting as a letter carrier in College Park, Maryland, later transferring to Martinsburg. He served as Postmaster for Summit Point and Gerrardstown post offices. He retired after 30 years of service. After retirement he was employed with the Berkeley County Courthouse as a Deputy Clerk, and assisted with the government elections.

Steve enjoyed life. He was a good man – an extraordinary man. He never forgot a face or name. Steve had a deep love and appreciation for friends and family. He was always generous and kind. Steve never met a stranger.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was very active in the community and was a huge Yankee and New York Jets fan.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his cherished wife of 35 years, Ann M. Noll Smallwood; one brother, Wallace Eugene Smallwood, Jr. and wife, Linda; two nieces, Jennifer Hanes and husband, Michael, Candace Hurst and husband. Dr. Erik Hurst; aunt, Christina Yurish; sisters-in-law, Marcia Noll, Melissa Warner and husband, David, Tanya Noll, and Connie Noll; and numerous adored nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and nephews, whom he treasured. A dedicated friend to so many, he will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate to know him.

He was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Larry Noll and Jeff Noll; and two nephews, Thomas and Joseph Noll.

Family will receive friends on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home. A Vigil Service will be held on Sunday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, Sept. 25, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Thomas Gallagher and Father Dean Borgmeyer, co-celebrants. Interment prayers were said at Rosedale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 336 S. Queen Street, Martinsburg, WV 25401.
